This is interesting. Hatzenbach, 1976. Lauda has just put on the slicks and is after Pace. He's followed by Lunger and Ertl. He won't finish the lap...

Nice pics Lucio. I am sure Tilke would have made the top one just a short straight to the karussell. I like the one of Clay in 1974, almost looks like his right rear tyre is about to pop off the rim.

I have many of the 1960/70's full race coverage that was uploaded onto YouTube a while ago but all seem to have been taken down now which deplorable, no doubt Chubby Brown's organisation m***r***t.com are responsible for that. One thing I don't think that you are quite correct on the two Matra MS7 F2 drivers, the first behind Oliver's BRM is Johnny Servos Gavin and the one behind that is Henri Pescarolo.

If ever there was a classic Nurburgring photo this has it all; brilliantly lit; car airborne. For me the ultimate as it feature the beautiful GLTL Lotus 49B of the great Jochen Rindt in the 1969 German GP.

there is a 30 minute clip of the 1965 German GP which is fascinating and really up close and personal, but the clip I have seen the briefest of glimpses of was the 1962 1000hkms which is the one I'd like to see
I was [again] very fortunate to have been driven around the original ring in about 1980, I was on a junket to Hockenheim with Duckhams Oils and was taken to the mighty ring, the down side [1] was I took 24 photos and the guy whose camera it was 'lost' the film, but the memory of being driven at speed in foggy conditions was incredible,
down-side [2] I was there a couple of years ago and wanted to take the bike around but the clutch was playing up so couldn't - next time....

Dan Gurney once said he aimed at a certain tree top to guide his approach to the Karussell. He almost won the 1967 German Grand Prix, retiring from the lead with a broken half-shaft at 4/5th distance.
What a year that could have been had his luck been better!

A friend of my fathers, who often came in my home during my childhood, participated in a couple of Formula Vee races at the Nürburgring in the late 60's - early 70's. In a conversation I overheard (at the coffee table), and which impressed me greatly, he admitted that he found it hard to remember all those turns of the Nürburgring. (And it should be mentioned that this guy was a several times national champion - a very good amateur racer).
And this was at the moderate speed of a Formula Vee. Imagine how it must be in a Formula One car, probably at double the speed (of a Formula Vee) almost everywhere ... I wonder if Juan Manuel Fangio, Jackie Stewart, and Niki Lauda ever had any problems remembering all the turns of 'The Ring' - and in the correct order! Maybe not at all ... (I have never read anything that suggested such problems.) I guess it wouldn't "work" to be in doubt at 300 km/h (180 mph) ...
