What an amazing photo the first one in the annexed series is! This is wheel-to-wheel racing, taken literally. (From Motorsport Magazine (Monaco '74))

John Watson still makes the sharpest observations of any ex racer, it is a travesty that he is no longer used by the "mainstream" as an expert, he leaves Coultard et al so far behind they have been lapped twice! Couldn't say it better. John used to be a commentator for Eurosport and I always really enjoyed his sharp analysis and comments. A clever man for sure.

Couldn't say it better. Thanks Lucio. Can you imagine Coultard, or even Brundle, trying to explain the nuances of overtaking like John has in this feature. Not a chance that they could, and to explain it in a way that everyone could understand. One of Coultard's favourites at the moment is "rotating the car on the front axle" What!! For this "thicko John" that is basically oversteer which has been induced by the driver.

Not sure if that is a case of Denny getting muscular with JPB or Jean-Pierre sticking his nose in after Denny ran wide!
The Mike Pilbeam designed BRM P201 was a neat little car and showed great promise, shame was that BRM were on the downward spiral by 1974 thanks to Stanley's idiotic idea of running so many works cars each season.

Coulthard is so "corporate", so unimaginative. He writes (empty articles) on the Torygraph, he's so "establishment", classic British good ol' boys club kind of guy, without the gravitas and charisma of a Jackie Stewart.
Watson, on the other hand, hearing him talking in person is such a raconteur and witty guy. One could spend a whole evening listening to him and sharing Guinness.

John used to be a commentator for Eurosport and I always really enjoyed his sharp analysis and comments. A clever man for sure. Indeed . Along with Ben Edwards when he was a good commentator, and not the over excitable nationalistic chauvinist individual he is today on C4.

I’m surprised to hear that about Ben Edwards John, I never watch the C4 coverage.......I presume it’s not so good?

A most beautiful car indeed - and accomodated with a glorious engine. A bit similar in appearance to the Brabham BT42 / BT44 but with a more aggressive and powerful look.

I’m surprised to hear that about Ben Edwards John, I never watch the C4 coverage.......I presume it’s not so good? It's not only me Jamie, I have read many a post written by others who say something similar. Mind you even though he isn't the chap he was in Eurosport days, he is infinitely better than that legend in his own lunchtime David Croft, and god forbid James Allan. I championed the case for Ben when there was mention of C4 taking over F1 coverage, based on what I remembered of him from Eurosport and some of his then more recent work. But now he needs to tone down the excitability, and the over zealous support of UK drivers. My feeling is that the magnificent John Watson brought the best out in him, David Coultard is just plain shallow and as Lucio remarked too corporate in the old boy style.

Mikael it really was a good car and as you mention followed Gordon Murray's idea of a triangular chassis cross section. Mike Pilbeam was a very good designer and went on to design and produce some outstanding Hill Climb cars.

I think Wattie was one of the best if not the best co-commentators ever, but Jamie, sadly Ben has gone 'over-excitable' and lost that dry - rational thinking and commentating that was unbiased and without opinion to a Hamilton fest, I suppose trying to 'up' the excitement - which sadly I suppose they are all trying to be Murray imitators, and increase the tempo, sorry chaps let the racing do the talking
Lucio- those talks with Wattie sound motor racing heaven
There was a documentary some years ago, the book of which [well actually 2 copies] called the Power and the Glory - it was a great series and i may re-visit this and Wattie got to drive some great cars and his observations were excellent, whereas Mr Coulthard unless he is off 'script' or corporate imaging - then he is actually quite good - but when he says after someones engine has blown up 'the car has isshoos' it drives me nuts, please join Sky Mr C - please - the other co-commentator i enjoy is Alan McNish, not patronising nor corporate but insightful, enjoy his commentating
aw the V12 BRM's , sweet - although I never understood when you have one of the the most powerful V8 1.5 ltr you don't use that as a starting point, which if i am that forgetful Keith Duckworth did with the Ford 1.6 ltr engine- not sure - some time since I saw that documentary

I have a spare book if that is any good Jamie, Oooo yes, I’ll happily relieve you of that when we meet up next 👍 some lunch or a couple of pints in exchange 👍 I remember the TV series had an episode with lots of Rick Mears screen time talking about the nuances of racing at Indy.....it was brilliant, especially when Rick was describing a series of oversteer, grip, oversteer, grip moments and then explaining how the mechanics were amazed at his recollection of the ‘moment’ as it was over in a fraction of a second. Rick was an incredible driver and is one of my favourites.
