Have watched the 24 hours, must say that I struggled to appreciate it. I don't like the cars, I don't like the track. I prefer much more watching racing on the mountain, Bathurst, in recent years: exciting track, competitive racing. It wasn't a vintage race but I still enjoyed it. I have the opposing view in that I like the cars but Daytona is a little....Meh. Its the season opener though so Im always excited when it comes round. I'm hoping for some close racing this season and all the DPI's showed pace at times....Mazda / Joest have a little work to do though. The Bathurst 12 hours is next week and I shall be tuning in to that also, that's a great, great track and its generally a good race. I watched more than I had expected and thought it was enjoyable, very fast paced with few yellows, but spoiled by too many right-rear Continental tyre failures. The prototype field was filled with competitive cars, including the brand new Penske Acuras, remarkably fast in their first race. I agree that the infield road course at Daytona is not ideal, but almost every big oval dominates the road course inside its boundaries. The only exception I've seen was Ontario Motor Speedway, where the Formula One circus came in 1971 for the Questor Grand Prix. That road course excelled because it used less of the oval. The race was also excellent, but sadly never repeated, and within ten years the speedway (identical to Indianapolis) was bulldozed into oblivion.

Normally the race is shown in America delayed several weeks or months, but it's one of the great race events and I always watch.

My mother had a crush on James Garner, judiciously waiting until my father was gone. His better show was in the late 1950s, a western called "Maverick" in which Garner was perfectly cast as Bret Maverick. I still remember the theme song! I always liked James Garner, but he always portrayed the same character, James Garner, something done by many actors but not the very best. He and Clint Eastwood were good friends as young actors in the 1950s before success came to both, first on television and then in the movies. They were both wusses... Had to google "wuss" too...
They both were a bit limited as actors, Eastwood developed more gravitas, not that he necessarily had it naturally, in my view, but he was capable to exploit to the best what fell in his lap - "the man with no name", Callahan etc. Then obviously he made some very good films as director himself.
Garner was always a bit "lighter", always a nice guy. I have never seen Maverick, but he did a remake with Mel Gibson, which I recall I went to see long time ago in Rome while at uni.

The remake was pretty bad. You know a romantic comedy with Jody Foster as the femme fatale is on shaky ground! No offense to her because she's a smart lady and very good actress, just not in a romantic comedy.

Yes! I forgot Foster was in it. Great actress indeed, but definitely not a femme fatale.

I had a busy weekend so didn't see as much as I wanted to, only some fragments here and there and keeping the scores. Not a classic but not a bad race either. But as Jamie said it is the start of the new race season so that is always good!
They really should force the designers to make better looking prototype cars though and that also goes for F1!

The most interesting part of the race for me was when a little rain hit overnight and Lando Norris was going mightily quickly, the fastest man on track by quite some margin. That boy is going to be a top, top Grand Prix driver.

Yes, Lando Norris is a very promising young driver. The new generation with Max, Ocon, Gasly and soon Lando is nicely shaping up. Some very talented racers!

Thanks to Jamie Kindly putting the Daytona link up I managed to watch some of the action, which wasn't too bad if I am to be honest. However I got rather frustrated by the fact that the transmission kept "buffering" even though I have a good line speed for rural France and enhanced by a VPN.
I have no problem with the track myself as it is quite unique and seeing the cars on the banking is pretty impressive also, I'd rather that than the rubbish Tilkedomes that are now foisted upon us from any cash rich country who haven't heard of true democracy.
The Prototypes are pug ugly things which are aesthetically undesirable as the current F1 vehicles, which are all based on single seater design merely clad in some mere bodywork to hint at a sports car. The GT's were fantastic to watch and with some excellent variety in design and motive power.

I also had a problem with buffering this time around which I put down to our woeful clock speed (despite being relatively close to London), perhaps there was an issue with the IMSA feed as I’ve not encountered the problem before?
I actually quite like the prototypes, though they are not what I’d call attractive and agree that the GT’s are wonderful machines. I believe that that was the first ever win for Lamborghini in a 24 hour race.
