The "sandbox" at the end of the Mulsanne straight, at Le Mans 1968. If you went out, it was definitely "over-and-out" - but very safe (except that the driver shouldn't stay there, of course ...).
Translation of the text (from the Danish Motorsport yearbook 1968-69):

Came across this older article. Such a point of view may partly explain the core of the problem:
Reading it (at this time, eight years on, with hindsight) almost makes you drop your jaw!

Competition wasn't improved by the track limitation enforcement, an estimated 1200 (according to motorsport.com) which missed official notice. Did someone decide to crack down without notifying our Round Table? I wish they would instead enforce David Croft's violations of crap limits in the broadcast booth.
Anthony Kennedy made a good point about the futility of other teams employing drag reduction systems since they are all inferior to Red Bull's and there's little effective gain against Max and Sergio. The genius aerodynamicist works for the team with the most effective drag reduction. Shouldn't any well-designed system be roughly equivalent? Passing Leclerc on the long straight at Azerbaijan in late April, Verstappen was 18 mph faster than the Ferrari, a massive advantage.
Did anyone else notice Helmut Marko riding bareback on the gigantic metal bull during the race? He tried a saddle, but the saddle horn trespassed against him painfully.

I think the tarmac runoffs were put in to prevent a Wayne Rainy type injury to the bike racers who use the same circuit I believe. Maybe it is time to have separate purpose built tracks for cars and bikes.

Without Red Bull, it actually would have been an entertaining race. There were some great battles throughout the field and I was happy to see Ferrari improve. Fair to say they are now the second team behind RB. It looks like Aston Martin is dropping back a bit and Mercedes seems lost. Nice to see a revived McLaren with the upgrades on Lando's car. I hope they can keep that up. But the overspeed Max still has in hand is incredible. When he came out of the pits on cold hards and overtook Sainz who was on hot, but still relatively new mediums, it looked like Carlos was standing still. But Carlos was actually having a good race and he was on it all weekend. The speed difference to the Red Bull is amazing and a bit depressing. So is the sight of the thousands of my countrymen dressed up in orange. Not my cup of tea. Anyway.... track limitations and the white lines. It was a farce. A one or two meter wide strip of gravel or grass and then the tarmac run off area. How difficult can it be. Doesn't take away the fact that Max, Charles and Checo had no penalty.

I was terribly saddened to hear of this young man’s tragic passing and my condolences to his friends and family
Spa has gone from the most terrifying of circuits (bar the Isle of Man and various Irish road circuits ) to a circuit that isn’t making much sense right now with huge run offs and as said above a return to gravel traps might provide some answers
Having just been in the Ardennes and stopped at Bastogne I can testify just how unpredictable the weather can be in that beautiful area
i did catch some of the race but got terribly confused and distracted by the penalties, what was good was seeing the Ferrari’s back in action and that has to be good
