As he did last year In Nashville, Colton tried too hard in pursuit and hit the wall. Josef Newgarden, Romain Grosjean and Alex Palou were there in the end. The race ended under yellow with a single lap remaining and Newgarden just ahead of Grosjean, who I believe would have caught and passed him. Sacrebleu!
A good race and certainly the latter part when Palou, Grosjean and Newgarden were racing for the win. Colton's mistake could be very costly. Not what you need for a title challenge.
Romain must be enjoying himself, fighting for the win again! His day will come. Newgarden and Palou are serious title contenders again. McLaughlin still has something to prove.

Not forgetting that it was a double header with a round of IMSA as well. After what was described as a stunning pole position by Seb Bourdais, he and Renger van der Zander led home a Ganassi one/two which was some consolation after the team had poor fortune at Daytona and Sebring. I have yet to see any of the action from Long Beach as the timings were not kind here in Europe and we had rather a full weekend of motor sport anyway .

It was a very good race and exciting at times! The original course laid out by racing enthusiast Christopher Pook was so wonderful that during quiet period aerial shots I sometimes focus on sections like the descent at Linden Avenue and the equally steep ascent at Pine. I can pinpoint the exact place Gilles Villeneuve spun in the short chute just before the uphill, astonishing those nearby with a sudden 180 entirely within the wheelbase of his 312 T3. Having seen Long Beach at its best must be like a romance with Sophia Loren at her gorgeous best, both still wonderful later, but neither quite the same... I don't know what happened to Rinus Veekay at the hairpin. I suspect he was knocked offline by someone in Turn 10 (the penultimate lefthand corner) and took a chance into the hairpin badly out of position, running into Castroneves (who deserved it after past infractions there). He was one of several drivers who showed good speed in practice but were never factors in the race. P.S. The commentators keep saying Jimmie Johnson will stop making rookie mistakes, while I keep saying he won't.

The IMSA sports cars are a great addition at Long Beach. In years past they've had some excellent support races, with SCCA Trans-Am, Formula Atlantic and professional Super Vee all standouts. Even the otherwise absurd celebrity race (everyone in identical race-prepared Toyota Celicas) was made interesting by legendary greats Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones catching and passing the inept celebs despite a minute's handicap.
I recorded the IMSA race (it was a very full weekend ) and look forward to the great success of one of my favorites, Sebastien Bourdais!

I recorded the IMSA race (it was a very full weekend ) and look forward to the great success of one of my favorites, Sebastien Bourdais! I noticed that there was a good approx 50 minutes highlight of the race on YouTube last night and will try to pick it up today. I also watched an excellent highlight off the IndyCar race yesterday which was good. No doubt in my mind that Colton Herta is the quickest out there but far too many introductions to the scenery are creeping into his race weekends, these need to be ironed out. Roman's first race win in the series cannot be too far off now. I agree Sebastien Bourdais is a class act and one of my favourites also, such a shame that he mistimed his F1 effort when he went to Toro Rosso during the period when everything at Red Bull was being directed at Vettel.

Birmingham Alabama - Barber Motorsports ParkColton Herta was fastest in FP1 at the Alabama road course. Alexander Rossi a fraction slower in second and Romain Grosjean third. A one-two-three for Andretti Autosport. It’s only FP1 but the Honda powered cars seem to have the edge over the Chevys.

The race was very exciting with abundant passes, several on the outside of 130mph Turn 12. Although Patricio O'Ward deserved to win, equally deserving was Rinus Veekay, who controlled the race until the final stop for tyres and fuel, during which he lost two places and the race. In third afterward, he slowly faded from contention. I keep the remote and mute button handy because I normally understand what's happening and don't want a hyperbolic drama queen telling me. Should leigh diffey and david croft be trapped by good fortune in an elevator for several days, a contest of idiocy would ensue which only one would survive. Barber Motorsports Park is a wonderful road course in a park-like setting complete with a large and very cool museum of vintage motorsport. In other words, essentially how racing enthusiasts want heaven to be and a good alternate destination for a round table reunion in case Siebkens Inn in Elkhart Lake is fully booked.

I managed to watch the brief qualifying and race thanks to youtub and was mightily impressed with the circuit - that is some circuit and from what you are saying Carl a real motor racing fan's heaven, and sounds like like a splendid place for a round table reunion
don't know what happened to my man Jack, he seemed to be running as high as 8th but seemed to disappeared after that- the race was won with class

Yes Carl it was an excellent race with plenty of action and a very good win for Pato O'Ward who now seems able to keep his tyres in tact, or the team have sorted the issue out. Veekay looked to have it under control but lost it all with being a few tenths slower in the pit stop and laps before the stop, shame but that is motor racing. The one thing that really struck me was the fact that several really quick guys had their races seriously compromised by getting stuck behind a much slower driver/car who then defended resolutely. Colton Herta was meteoric coming back through the field but came undone with frustration behind Scott McLaughlin and similarly Romain Grosjean who overflowed somewhat in getting past Rahal much to Diffey's protestations in the commentary box. In fact Romian got mired behind the much slower Newgarten for way too long as well. A fabulous circuit that just looks so beautiful, one of the best I have seen in more modern times and should be an abject lesson to the Tilke family . As well as being incredibly annoying Diffey should take up a position with the American Tourist Board as all he seems to talk abundantly about is the fact that such and such driver has brought their family to the USA and love life there so much.

A very good race and what a beautiful race track. I agree Carl, a racing enthusiasts heaven!
It was a shame for Veekay who looked to be too careful on his out lap after the last stop. O'Ward's pass on cold tyres was top class racing though and thus a very deserved win I feel.
But what about Colton Herta? He is always fast, always spectacular to watch but he is making too many mistakes lately. He is nowhere in the points standing and can't afford more races like this. F1 is in the back of his mind but F1 people will not be very impressed right now. He needs to up his game.

Colton Herta remains immature, maybe the result of adulation going to his head at an early age. A combination of his innate talent and his father's wisdom would be unbeatable.
Ed Carpenter's team has great knowledge of big ovals, where Carpenter has enjoyed success as a driver, and I wonder if the team was overwhelmed during the sequence of events on the final pit stop by the McLaren and Ganassi teams' greater experience on road courses. Veekay was held up by a slower car coming in and when he rejoined had to immediately fight for position on cold tyres and may have had a corresponding lack of available grip. He admitted, in the heat of the moment, forgetting to use the extra 50 bhp boost available to counter O'Ward on the approach to Turn 5, where he lost the lead. Not a good day for one of the great young drivers.
I don't know what happened between Grosjean and Rahal and who did what first to anger the other. It seems like a classic he said/he said with Romain saying Graham cut him off twice and Rahal insisting on innocence.
Helio Castroneves used one of his favorite passing maneuvers by punting Jimmie Johnson into a spin, but Johnson was able to continue and was the slower car holding up the leading Veekay into the pits.

There is a saying in motorcycle racing that you can make a fast rider more measured but you cannot make a slow rider fast!! The same is true in car racing and I would suggest that applies to Colton Herta. He has made mistakes but the same is true of the likes of Max and Charles in F1, it was also the same with Ayrton and Gilles. Try looking at it like this guys; if you have a talent far greater than many others you are bound to want to express it and over ambition can get the better of you especially when frustration creeps in.
Young Herta has an abundance of talent but we will only ever know how good he is if he gets into comparable machinery as the names mentioned earlier. He doesn't strike me as someone who is overly full of himself or for that matter someone who feels overly self entitled, but that is my take and I may be mistaken of course.
