Great memorabilia René, what an autograph to have in your collection. Nice photos too, it is as you say always good to share with like minds. Thanks JC, I know it's appreciated here. As for the autograph, he actually didn't gave it to me personally. I was in the paddock on the saturday collecting autographs and I knew Carlos was in the Williams tent but he was very difficult to approach for the fans. I walked around the tent and there was a small window where I saw Frank Williams inside. I called him and asked for his autograph. He seemed a bit surprised that a young kid wanted his signature but of course he gave it to me. Then I asked if he could get me Carlos's autograph as I saw him sitting inside the tent. Frank laughed at my cleverness and of course he went to Carlos to sign my piece of paper. So I also have Frank's autograph!

I take it AJ wasn't present at the time as you could have had his autograph as well .

But he didn't mind, on the contrary, he liked my approach.
As for Jonesy, I do have his also. But he gave it to me personally a few hours earlier. He was actually very friendly to the fans.

Impressive you managed to keep your autograph collection so carefully, René. Some of them may go on to become quite valuable ("pricey") if they aren't already.
I never managed to get autographs from GP drivers and the like. However, the local (and no longer existing) speedway/motocross track (called "Ørnedalsbanen" = Eagle Valley Track), some 8 km from my childhood home, actually arranged a few international speedway races, and on those occasions I got the autographs of "the stars of the day", like Ole Olsen and Ivan Mauger. However, those notebooks (containing them) are long lost ...

Well René I am sure in some convoluted way the AJ autograph would fit in with your Ferrari collection as Jonesy always likes to tell everyone that he was offered the Pironi replacement ride in the 126C2 at Monza, but told Ferrari he wanted to think about it. Ferrari chose not to wait and gave it to Mario instead. So AJ was a possible Ferrari pilot . JC

Not sure if Jonsey would have fitted into the Ferrari. I seem to remember him trying to fit into an Arrow or similar car at Long Beach and he had expnded to Mansell like proportions by then. Not sure if it was 1982 or 83, probably the latter.

Thanks Mikael,
In the first few years I collected all the photos and signatures in scrapbooks. I stopped doing that after 1984 so all that stuff is in boxes but the first years are very organized and that was also the time when I collected most autographs. And I always treasured the scrapbooks.
Indeed some of the autographs could make some money now but they are worth more to me. I guess Gilles Villeneuve's is the most valuable I have.

In every aspect Jones would not have fitted in the Ferrari!
Mario did.

AJ then went on to drive the Arrows for a few races in 1983 as you mention, at Long Beach he went quite well; and then onto the "comeback" in the Beatrice Lola-Ford. I find it mystifying why he retired as he did and then came back a short time later in much less competitive vehicles, maybe he got short of money . The other question is that Williams rated him so highly, so why not resign him if wanted he to comeback, or was that yet more F1 BS and politics. JC

Charles I think AJ was a person who acted a bit on the spur of the moment at times. I think his first retirement may have had something to do with his marriage. I think by the time he came back in 1984 with the Beatrice sponsored Lola, Williams had Rosberg plus I don't think Williams re employed drivers who had left them, especially in the lurch like he did at the end of 1981.

That is an interesting thought Rob. Williams were not known for re-employing drivers as you suggest. However Keke used to get annoyed at Patrick head always referring to how AJ would have done things, as if he were the messiah or something similar. Doubt that AJ would have been as good in those Williams Honda's as Keke was, he had his day in the full on ground effect FW07's where his bullish strength played to his strength a bit like Mansell in the active ride cars in later years.

Last night while surfing through YouTube I came across this brilliant little film of Carlos Reutemann testing the Ferrari T3 at Paul Ricard and it also features Gilles, all in Italian but one can get the gist of what is being said, also wonderful to hear the voices of these two incredible drivers.
