The thing with salt scattered on roads was that it destroyed cars and other motor vehicles, basically it was criminally insane. In the UK they would be out in force at the slightest sign of a snow fall, yet the most dangerous conditions were black ice. In the Uk back in the 1960/70/80's the cars just melted away with rust due to the application of salt to the roads. On those cars all the mechanical parts were fine but the chassis and bodies just corroded away, hence the very small amount of those cars around for classic collectors.
The funny thing is that my VW Passat that I bought new back in March 2000 is still like new, I believe that the VW group really worked at making sure the bodies were well preserved under the paintwork. They actually are very impressive in that respect.
