I went to the 1979 Race of Champions at Brands to see Gilles win, a bit divided as I wanted Mario and my beloved Lotus to win but Gilles was very popular.

great photo JC,
I was at 1979 Brands Race of Champions - a bit divided as I wanted my beloved Lotus to win, but I did like Gilles, probably the only time I ever really wanted a Ferrari to do well against a Lotus,

I know the feeling Chris. It was the same for me with Senna. I wanted him to win but also wanted Ferrari to win. It was easier though when Prost was driving for Ferrari as I didn't like the Frenchman at the time.
When Lauda and Villeneuve were driving for Ferrari all was right with the world. My support for man and machine was in perfect harmony.

I can relate to Niki and Gilles driving for Ferrari Rob, I always liked Niki and had a soft spot for Clay, but it did become a bit of 'us and them' in 1976 and the Machiavellian manifestations and conspiracies abounded. Brands in 76 nearly became a riot, which was great fun, especially when on full-length crutches, oh how I laughed, but we were divided and partisan and the way the press played it out no wonder it became a film, I always thought it ironic that Niki and James got on well and the press tried to make so much out of their relationship, a bit like the halcyon days of Colin and Richard in the rallying world.

I came across this picture earlier this evening of Gilles sitting on a racing Harley Davidson. To those not into bikes it isn't the Harley you would normally imagine but the two stroke racer from the 250 & 350 GP classes of 1970/80's period. This came about as a consequence of Harley Davidson purchasing the Italian company Aermacchi (I believe that to be correct). I bet the little guy actually had a go on the bike .

I bet the little guy actually had a go on the bike . I bet he did and probably also in that little Fiat 500! Great photo, never seen him on a bike before.

Michael loved his Cinquecento apparently.
Another fantastic little car that was simple and basic, but what motoring and cars should be all about.
Come to that, it is what motor sport should be like also.

that is a lovely set of photo's, looking at Gilles sitting on that bike with a cheeky grin makes it so real and Michael, who was probably the most frustrating F1 driver of all time, but I can see him having fun in the little 500, and of course he also tried motorbikes, which I was impressed with, not very successfully but I admire anyone who is prepared to have a go, but these pictures are a reminder of the fragility which we cling to.
John Charles, yes!

A beautfull photo of a pensive Gilles sitting on Jody’s car in 1980. “When will I have that no.1 on my car?”
