Oh yes, the proportions of the Indy cars of that time were just perfect. And there were also many very good looking Grand Prix cars in the late 80's, early 90's.
How difficult can it be to tweak the rules in such a way the cars become more aesthetically pleasing again? It is amazing that the people who have the power to make these changes don't see it... or don't want to see it.
Racing is a visual spectacle. Want more fans and more tv viewers? Make sure to cars look fantastic and the racing is close and exciting. No rocket science.

A wonderful banner image once again showing Ronnie Peterson calm and collected, in complete control and total harmony with the car. Does anyone know if he had a favorite of all the cars he drove? Drivers often recall a perfectly balanced Formula 2 car, for example, that was absolute fun to drive.

I am now in heaven with the latest banner image. The wonderful Ferrari 312PB from 1972 driven by my joint favourite driver of all time "Super Swede" . JC, I wanted to ask you. Ronnie was mostly partnered with Tim Schenken at Ferrari. How good was Schenken? Could he keep up with Ronnie or would Ronnie have more wins had he been partnered with Ickx? The Ickx/Andretti pairing always seemed to have number one status in that team.

René,
Tim Schenken was a very good driver with a very impressive lower category record particularly in F3, whoever he had some reasonable drives in F1 but never really caught the eye by doing something extraordinary. At the time there was a rather funny anecdote put about called "Tim Schenken's Book of 100 Excuses" which would imply that he tended to complain a lot about his equipment etc,
I don't think he had the ultimate pace that Ronnie had, but then few did, so I have not considered if he rather hampered Ronnie as a team mate. I do think they complimented one another very well at the time. According to David Hobbs, who drove with Ronnie in America for BMW some years later, he was a fantastic guy to be paired with as he said to Hobbs you have the car how you want it, and I will drive it!!
With regard to the Ferrari sports car team at that time I have the feeling that the Jacky Ickx car was the number one vehicle, as he was their star driver at the time, and without question at his very peak in performance and more importantly interest.
Carl,
Do you know I do not think that anyone ever asked Ronnie what his favourite car was. One would assume that the Lotus 72E would be right up there, but also as you mention a F2 car would be close, and that would have to be his March 712M.

Thanks for the info on Tim, JC. Never heard of "Tim Schenken's Book of 100 Excuses"! But he must have been a good racer, otherwise Enzo would never have allowed him to sit in one of his cars as a works driver. And the 'all Swedish team' made for a great colour scheme on the Ferrari!

On the subject of Ronnie's favourite car(s) I came across this picture this afternoon which I had not seen previously. It is a quality image of him in his March 712M, without a doubt it must be Rouen because of the "strange" rear wing arrangement. Surely one of "Super Swede's" favourite cars :-

Just as an example of Tim Schenken's abilities I attach a link to a Swedish web site which features a big Formula Two race in Sweden from 1971. The results list is very interesting with a hugely impressive grid in a highly competitive series. Ronnie won the event (of course ) but just look at the others present, and Tim finished a very good third. Note the comments at the end about Ronnie, in English! Schenken was good make no mistake, hence Ferrari choosing him. www.ointres.se/f2_kinnekulle_1971.htm

What I recall about Tim Schenken is his bitter criticism of John Surtees as team leader when he drove for him in 1972. Schenken became very tired of "Big John", instead of working with his drivers on their complaints, getting in the car and going faster than them. Since Surtees was retired, this approach does seem counterproductive. I have great respect for John Surtees, and believe he would have been knighted if not for his apparent preference for foreign teams, but he was at times controlling.

Here are four of the Ferrari sports car team mates of 1972. Clay and Jackie looking very dapper; Ronnie 70's cool and with the ultimate shades "Aviators"; and Tim looking dare I say it typically Australian as he could pass for a period Ashes cricketer. P.S. What can it be that lies in the envelopes?

What can it be that lies in the envelopes? Wonderful photo! Über cool! What's in the envelopes? Hmmm. I am sure Carl knows the answer but I can make a few guesses. - Could it be that Ronnie and Tim just received a new contract? Ronnie tries to look cool because he expected no less. Tim can't suppress his happiness - Or is it the warranty card of their new Heuer watches? - Or the latest edition of Autosprint? - Or two speeding tickets just handed over by Mr. Carabinieri in the back?
